Colorado Springs Quilt Guild General Meeting Minutes for January 12, 2012

Call to Order: President Bonnie Burt called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. The minutes from our December meeting were approved as published in our newsletter. Bonnie thanked all new board members and committee chairpersons for volunteering to serve this year. Ann Seymoure will be our raffle quilt custodian and Cheryl Ross will be our historian. We need a comfort quilts coordinator as Patty Loewenkamp is moving to Nevada. L (She’ll be coming back for our retreat, though.) Bonnie has asked members to serve on a hospitality committee to welcome new members. The financial committee appointed by Bonnie has reviewed our books and our guild is good to go!

Officers Reports:

Treasurer – Kathi LaFrance: We have $20,147.82 in our operating budget and $3097.33 in our raffle account. This gives us a total of $23,245.15.

2^nd VP Programs – Mary Hattick: Our February program will be charm and strip quilts. Plan to bring in some that you’ve done to share! Also, bring in the pattern (if it is shareable) or the name of the pattern. Mary handed out Hoffman 2011 challenge fabric (H8709 Moss Gold #98G) to paid members. Make something (anything!) for our August meeting as a Hoffman 2011 challenge trunk show will be our featured program. Mary handed out surveys for our input on program interest. These can be turned in to her in February.

1^st VP Membership – Susan Reed Throckmorton: We ended 2011 with 99 members. As of this evening we have 51 paid members. New members include: Donna Lewis, Lorraine Goodmen, Connie Patterson, Donna Stephens and Jean Lemesany. We had 6 guests this evening: Kristi Smith, Chris McQueen, Mary Guthery, Mimi Wheeler, Donna Mathewson and Pat Gamer. Susan congratulated members who have January birthdays.

OLD 2^nd VP Programs – Jeanie Brooks: (She’s not really old!) Programs for 2012 are: February – Strippers vs. Charmers; March – Charity night; April – Ruth from Ruth’s Stitchery; May – Pat Richie; June – Margo Krager including a Saturday, June 16 AM and a PM workshop; July – 25^th Birthday Party; August – Hoffman 2011 Challenge Trunk Show, shared with Marsha McCain from Nuts N Bolts; September – Beth Lonnquist; October – Auction; November – Sally Schneider with a workshop on November 10^th and December – Christmas Party. Would we like a program at our Christmas party again? Can you bring a charm quilt or a strip quilt to our February meeting? Let Jeanie know! Also, let Jeanie know if you can attend our retreat September 21^st – 23^rd. Beth Lonnquist will teach a Saturday morning class during the retreat. Bring a friend!

Committee Reports:

Secret Pals – Julie McNames: We revealed our “old” pals. The proposal for this year is to only have one round of secret pals. Fill out a form and return them to Julie and we will have a FUN secret pal round from March to September.

Block of the Quarter – Wendy Riggs: The lucky winner of our Winter’s Day block of the quarter was Susan Reed-Throckmorton. Our new block of the quarter is a Scrap Bag Block. Wendy showed us which fabrics would be appropriate and she has plenty of patterns if you’d like to join in the fun.

Auction – Eddie Gray: Eddie and Angela will be coordinating our 2012 October auction. Eddie reminded us to make something that we would want to give to a close friend for a gift. We made $3800.00 for our guild last year (in 1 hour and 15 minutes) at our auction.

Strip & Charm Exchange & a Challenge! – Barb Czarniecki: The colors for the strips and charms have been determined and are published in the newsletter. February will be heart motifs. Barb clarified the directions for cutting. Barb is challenging us to make a bag or a garment using one technique that we’ve never done before! Get these done for our July birthday party.

Newsletter & Blog - Mary Hattick: Kitty Hindle will be writing our newsletter this year. She would like all articles and submissions to be e-mailed (cospringsqg@gmail.com) to her by the 20^th of the month. Mary will continue to keep our Blog updated. Ask Mary if you don’t know how to find links for past newsletters, quilt pictures or free patterns!

Monthly Raffle – Mary Ruttner: We will have a monthly raffle starting next month as our license application still needs to be processed.

Charity Quilts & Challenge Quilts - Ann Seymoure: We had 12 participants in the UFO project challenge. 26 UFO’s were completed and the winners of 85 fat quarters were: Patti Driscoll, Cindy Pring, Susan Reed-Throckmorton, Barb Czarniecki and Laural Hoppes.

The new challenge will include UFO’s and PIGS (Project In a Grocery Sack). Each month bring in what you’re completed for Show and Tell. If your PIG is completely finished, you will sign and be eligible for a drawing for a $25 gift certificate.

We will feature charity quilts for Safe Passage at our March meeting. Please bring charity quilts for Show and Tell that night. The executive director of Safe Passage will be at that meeting. There will be a Sew Day at Ann’s home on Saturday, January 28^th, at 10:00 AM to work on quilts. Bring food to share for lunch or snacks.

Charity Quilts for Veterans – Joan Musick: Our very own celebrity, Joan (as featured in the Gazette) reported that 28 twin sized or larger quilts were delivered in December to the Veteran’s Home in Pueblo. Masculine- type fabric donations are requested for this committee! Everyone is welcome to join in and help sew, cut, etc at Ruth’s on the Friday’s after our guild meeting from 1:00 – 5:00.

Hospitality – Debbie Jacobs: Please let Debbie know if you can help with snacks and drinks for our February meeting. sewingangel@gmail.com

Raffle Quilt – Dana Zimmerman: Dana has sewed and quilted our 2012 Storm at Sea raffle quilt. The quilt was on display for our meeting and it is just BEAUTIFUL. Thank you, Dana, for your hard work. Dana will be in charge of ticket sales for the quilt.

Show and Tell: Remember, when you show us your quilts your name is included in a quarterly drawing for a gift! Members who participated in Show and Tell this month were: Barb Czarniecki, Mary Hattick, Amy Duell, Laural Hoppes, Kathi LaFrance & Patti Driscoll.

Door Prizes: If you win one, please bring one to our next meeting! It should be a new item, $10.00 or less in value. Winners were: Kathy Dailey, Judy Ferguson & Carole DiGiacomo.

Announcements:

Barb Shie: The next CQC meeting will be January 28^th in Littleton. The speaker will be Lois Hallock speaking on “Your Perfect Quilting Space”. Quilt Colorado will be at the Loveland Embassy Suites July 11 – 15 and you will be able to see a preview of the classes offered at CQC’s January meeting. Registration for the classes will be on-line this year.

Bonnie: Make heart blocks (any size) to give to Laural Hoppes, showing her our appreciation for being our 2011 guild president. Please bring these to our February meeting. (Laural likes reds, pinks and purples.)

Bonnie thanked Kathi LaFrance and Mary Ruttner who attended a games license training with a very short notice.

Next board meeting is February 2, 2012 at 4:30 at Ruth’s Stitchery. Anyone is invited.

January Board Meeting: Gloria Lesher

We met January 5, 2012, at Ruth’s at 4:30. Members present were: Bonnie Burt, Ann Seymoure, Eddie Gray, Angela Gilpin, Kathi LaFrance, Barb Rhoads, Laural Hoppes, Jeanie Brooks, Cheryl Ross, Susan Reed-Throckmorton, Mary Hattick, Mary Ruttner, Cindy Pring and Gloria Lesher

Bonnie would like a welcoming committee to greet new members at meetings. Bonnie requested that we estimate our financial needs for our 2012 budget so this can be discussed at our February board meeting and printed in the March newsletter. The by-laws committee will also publish proposed changes in the March newsletter. We discussed which committees need to be filled and the need for some of our members to attend game manager training.

Cheryl Ross, Barb Rhoads and Susan Reed-Throckmorten reported on the records inspection of our finances and all was found to be in order. We discussed committee budgets, receipts and invoices.

General meeting minutes: October 13, 2011

Laural Hoppes opened the meeting at 6:30. The minutes from our September meeting were approved. The membership voted and approved to display our quilts at Quilt-A-Fair next year.

The drawing for our fall block-of-the quarter will be in November.

If anyone has ideas for strip quilts / projects please e-mail or call Jeanie or Cindy. We will be stripping in November!

CQC will meet in Colorado Springs on October 22^nd and Linda Poole will be speaking.

Laural congratulated our members with October birthdays.

The meeting adjourned at 6:34 and our program, the Auction, concluded at 8:00.

We met October 6, 2011, at Ruth’s Stitchery at 6:30. Members present were: Susan Reed-Throckmorton, Cindy Pring, Jeanie Brooks, Gloria Lesher, Laural Hoppes and Mary Hattick.

Laural announced our total sales of raffle tickets for Rock Ledge and Quilt-A- Fair. We will donate $100 to the Rock Ledge Ranch.

We’ve been invited to hang our quilts at Quilt-A-Fair next year. We will join CQC as a guild for $25.00.

We will make a deposit to Christ Haven Lodge in Florissant to reserve September 21-23, 2012, for our quilt retreat. This deposit will come out of the raffle account.

August Board Meeting: Gloria Lesher

We met August 4, 2011, at Ruth’s Stitchery at 6:40. Members present were: Cindy Pring, Susan Reed-Throckmorton, Ann Seymoure, Jeannie Brooks and Gloria Lesher

Ann has found information for buying more quilt racks.

The board would like to meet with the By-Law committee to go over proposed changes.

The Rock Ledge Ranch craft show will be September 16, 17 & 18^th. A sign-up sheet for volunteers to sell tickets for our raffle quilt will be passed around at our next meeting.

Colorado Springs Quilt Guild General Meeting Minutes for July 14, 2011

Call to Order: President Laural Hoppes called the meeting to order at 6:30.

Officers Reports:

Secretary – Gloria Lesher: Correction to the meeting minutes from June: The quilt guild in Woodland Park is called Quilters Above the Clouds.

2^nd VP Programs – Jeanie Brooks: In August, Nani Kaai will be speaking. In September, we’ll have Carolyn McCormark talk to us about No Stress Paper Piecing. Carolyn will teach a workshop on Saturday, September 10^th. 144 tickets were sold on our raffle quilt during the Shop Hop. We are at $1450 in raffle quilt ticket sales to this date.

1^st VP Membership – Susan Reed Throckmorton: Four guests this evening were: Marilyn Brandkorst, Brenda Walsh, Eunice Ciaccio & Lois Boschee. We now have 95 members in our guild.

Committee Reports:

Strip Exchange – Barb Czarniecki: Strip colors for August are white or tone on tone whites. Instructions are on the website for our mystery quilt. We’re on step 7.

Block of the Quarter – Wendy Riggs: The Go’in Fishing blocks were won by Mona Wood. Wendy handed out a new pattern: Days of Autumn. The drawing for these blocks will be in October.

Charity Quilts – Ann Seymoure: Safe Passage really appreciates the quilts we give them. UFO challenge: The year is ½ over. Are you ½ done with your UFO’s?

Monthly Raffle – Our raffle for this month was a basket of goodies (fabrics, stamps, mug, candle & dish towel) donated by Patricia Driscoll. The lucky winner was Marie Blowers.

Raffle Quilt – Laural: The quilt will hang at NaLa’s in July. Check your calendars to see if you can sell some raffle tickets at the Rock Ledge Ranch craft show – September 16, 17 & 18. It’s a fun way to visit with people and everyone who sees our raffle quilt always wants to own it!

Charity Quilting Bee- Julie McNames & Joan Musick: 8 members met on July 8^th and they sewed some quilts for the VA Home. If you have fabrics that would be appropriate for older veterans (especially men) please consider donating them to this worthy cause. Come and sew with the bee at the Senior Center in the Ceramic Room from 1:00 – 5:00 on the 2^nd Friday after our next guild meeting, August 12th.

By-Laws Committee- Cathi LaFrance: The committee has been meeting and some proposed changes have been written to our existing by-laws. Go to our website to view the proposed changes. We will discuss this in August and vote in November.

Auction- Edie Gray: Edie has some flyers printed advertising our October auction. Please pass them out to your favorite shop, workplace lounge, etc. Edie will be gone in September, but get ready to bring auction items to the meeting in October so we can make tons of money for our guild.

New Business:

We need a new chairperson for the monthly raffle. Lyn Seaver and Cathi LaFrance have graciously volunteered to take over this position from Barb Shie for the rest of the year.

Announcements:

Laural Hoppes: Congratulated our July birthday members and gave them candy bars.

Jeannie Brooks: The Quilters Above the Clouds guild will have a quilt show on Saturday, July 30^th from 10 – 4 at the Woodland Park library. Marsha McKane, owner of Nuts N Bolts was happy to have us at her shop during the Shop Hop.

Joan Musick: Joan now has 14 applique patterns for sale that are from “The Missing Flower Tops” and “The Midnight Snack” quilt.

Marie Blowers: The Friends of Rock Ledge are asking for hand sewed donations to sell at the Rock Ledge general store. If you can make pot holders, baby blankets, dishtowels, doll clothes, etc., please consider donating some to the general store. Talk to Marie if you have questions.

Marsha McKane: Marsha thanked us for being at Nuts N Bolts for the Shop Hop. She is offering a discount to all of our members on July 25 – 30^th. Nuts N Bolts Needleworks is at 200 S. Chestnut Street in Woodland Park.

Next board meeting is August 4, 2011 at 6:30 at Ruth’s Stitchery. All are invited.

Next meeting is August 11, 2011 at 6:30 at the senior center.

Show and Tell: Members who participated in Show and Tell this evening were: Laural Hoppes, Bev Haring, Dana Zimmerman , Sandra Graham, Barb Czarniecki and Marie Blowers.

Door Prizes: We will resume door prize drawings in August. If you’ve won one in the last while, please bring one to our meeting.

Program: We ate delicious food and birthday cake and cupcakes. We played some fun games and we thank Marie Blowers and Julia Grigsby for a wonderful 24^th birthday party.

We met July 7, 2011, at Ruth’s Stitchery at 6:40. Members present were: Laural Hoppes, Cindy Pring, Susan Reed-Throckmorton, Gloria Lesher, Jeanie Brooks, Mary Hattick and Julie McNames.

Charity Quilting Bee: Fabric has been donated and Susan and Julie will ask members for fabric donations. A motion was made and seconded to give $250 for the Charity Bee to get established with fabric and batting. Mary will work on a label design for the quilts.

Raffle quilt is at NaLa’s for July and it will hang at Nuts & Bolts in August.

A discussion followed on Carolyn McCormick’s workshop for September 10^th.

We met June 2, 2011, at Ruth’s Stitchery at 6:40. Members present were: Laural Hoppes, Cindy Pring, Susan Reed-Throckmorton, Ann Seymoure, and Gloria Lesher

Cindy will check on labels for charity quilts.

Ann will call and ask about a new pole for hanging quilts.

The senior center would charge us $25.00 to hold a bee there.

Laural went over sign-ups for selling raffle tickets for the Shop Hop the weekend of June 24, 25 & 26. The Rocky Mountain Sewing Expo will be July 7, 8 & 9.

July Birthday Party – July 14th

Another year of friendship and its well worth celebrating. Since the UFO project exchange from last year was so much fun, Marie and I have decided to repeat the success. The only change would be that the item is quilt related. This insures that all participants receive something they truly can use in some form. Not all of us are cross-stitch, needlepoint, etc. interested but we are all quilt gifted. If you don’t have an UFO (who are you kidding!) that’s ok. Just enjoy the fun of seeing truly ugly/awesome items that come out of those bags. Just put your project in a bag of some sort and seal it so there is no peeking beforehand. If you receive something that just won’t work for you, save it for next year or donate to a worthy charity in your neighborhood. Keep it and we want to see later what was done with the gift. If it looks terrible – we can keep a secret and get a good laugh looking at it.

Now the important topic – food. To make a great variety for us to sample, please try to follow the list below. If the item doesn’t work, just exchange with someone.

L – P: Appetizer

R – Z: Veggie dish

Don’t worry about dessert, that is already taken care of with a large birthday cake.

Marie and I have decided to include an additional game and everyone gets a special treat with a few receiving an extra special treat. Come to the party and see what’s in store for you. It will be lots of fun.

May Board Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Laural Hoppes at 6:15 pm on May 5, 2011 at Ruth’s Stitchery. Present were: Laural Hoppes, Susan Reed-Throckmorton, Jeanie Brooks, Cindy Pring, Ann Seymoure and Debby Pyaett.

A vote was taken by the voting members to change the time of the meetings to 6:30 pm in the future.

Raffle Quilt sales at CQC in Golden was $50.00. The next venue in is Greeley and Ann Seymoure has said she will attend to sell raffle tickets. We will be able to sell tickets at the Rockledge event in Sept. We will ask for volunteers to help out at the next meeting. We discussed the new Quilting Bee at Rockledge and Laural will address it at the meeting also. We are going to try and put the raffle quilt at Ruth’s in May and NaLa’s quiltique in July, in addition to the other places we have booked.

Programs are going well, and Jeanie is working on 2012 speakers. She has just a few slots left for new speakers. Jeanie has asked to have the contract cleaned up and Laural has volunteered to type up the changes for her. The flyer is done for the next workshop; flyers will be available at the meeting and will be put on the blog/newsletter also.

It was brought to our attention that members are asking for the “bookmark” we have used in the past with speakers. The board decision was to print the bookmark, but make it more generic so changes can be made for cancellations of speakers.

By-Laws committee will meet next week and now has 6 members.

It was discussed that we will look for an additional venue for the charity quilts that will accept “tied” quilts. Several members have mentioned to board members they wish to “tie” the quilts. We also discussed having a Charity Quilting Bee at a quilt shop to make quilts.

25 tickets sold at March CQC in Boulder

268 tickets sold at Pueblo Quilt Expo

Jeanie will order 2000 additional tickets to cover sales at Shop Hop, Rocky Mountain Sew Expo and for membership sales.

Raffle Quilt will be shown at Nuts and Bolts (Woodland Park) during Shop Hop. Members are needed to sign up to sell tickets on Friday and Sunday (Saturday is already covered).

Will ask membership if they want guild to join Rocky Mountain Quilt Foundation ($30 annual dues)

Comfort Quilts

Patty Loewenkamp asks Comfort Quilt blocks be made without colored HST in corner. Use white for background and bright fabric for star.

Ann delivered a comfort quilt to Berta Sylvia after her husband’s death in March.

Dana Zimmerman has chosen the pattern “Storm at Sea” for the 2012 Raffle Quilt.

2012 Guild Retreat date changed to Sept 21-23.

Will poll membership to see if they would like Margo Krager, fabric historian, as a possible 2012 program/workshop.

We met March 3, 2011, at Ruth’s Stitchery at 6:08. Members present were: Laural Hoppes, Cindy Pring, Jeanie Brooks, Susan Reed-Throckmorton, Ann Seymoure, Mary Hattick, and Gloria Lesher

A motion was made, seconded and passed to spend $75.00 to get insurance for our raffle quilt. We will need to spend $50.00 to have the quilt appraised.

A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the budget as prepared and completed by Cindy Pring.

We are set to have Kathy Meyers for our April program and Kathy Gaul for our May program.

Raffle quilt was at the CQC meeting in Longmont and at the Long arm Meeting in Colorado Springs. Other venues for the display of the raffle quilt were discussed.

So far volunteers to work on the By-Laws committee include: Julia Grigsby, Lyn Seaver and Susan Reed-Throckmorton.

We met at Ruth's Stitchery at 6:00.

Programs: Programs are set for the year. Contracts have been extended for our May and August programs. March Show and Tell will be reserved for charity quilts only.

Miscellaneous: A suggestion was made to have contact information on our web site for people who are interested in our guild. A quilt network is being established by guilds around the state, allowing for guilds to share speakers. A comfort quilt was given to Margaret Guenther, as her husband passed away in January.

Barb Shie is now trained as a games manager. We would like some other people to be trained. We would like our raffle quilt to be shown February 26th in Greeley, March 18th in Denver and April 2nd in Glenwood Springs. If the quilt is left at a venue overnight, it must be insured and it has to be appraised before it is insured.

Budget: We went over the budget line by line with a discussion on each. The budget will be printed in the March newsletter and will be voted on by the membership at our March meeting.

Colorado Springs Quilt Guild General Meeting Minutes for January 13, 2011

Call to Order: President Laural Hoppes called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. She welcomed all members by reminding us that the CSQG was founded in 1987 by a small group of women sharing a common interest in quilting. We will be celebrating our 24^th birthday this year. What began as a quilting bee has grown into a large nonprofit organization of 80 plus members.

Officers Reports:

Secretary – Gloria Lesher: There were no minutes submitted from the December 2010 meeting. The Board Meeting Minutes from December 3, 2010 are printed on our website.

Treasurer – Cindy Pring: Our $$$ balance is on-line. Cindy is referring to the budget that was created for us from last year. She is currently interested in line item amounts on the budget.

2^nd VP Programs – Jeanie Brooks: Our February program will be Kaleidoscope Quilts, Stack N Whack. Jeanie and Mary Hattick showed us examples of the Kaleidoscope Spring Star pattern and the Four Patch Posie pattern. There will be a workshop offered on February 12^that Ruth’s Stitchery. If you are interested in signing up and / or want to know more about a supply list, contact Mary Hattick.

Our March program will be advocacy or charity night. Members are asked to bring in their favorite advocacy quilts and quilt patterns. Patterns will be handed out for members to use.

Jeanie asked for a show of hands of people who might be interested in a quilt retreat in September of 2012.

1^st VP Membership – Susan Reed Throckmorton: We have 52 paid members as of 6:45 this evening. We had 7 guests this evening and some of them have joined us as paid members.

Committee Reports:

Secret Pals & Hospitality – Jill McCloy: Sophie Hamilton assisted Jill with having members sign up for Secret Pals. Secret Pals from July – December 2010 will be revealed at our next meeting in February. Secret Pal names for our current months (January – July 2011) will be mailed to participants this month. Jill offered a $15 Starbucks giftcard to someone to clean up at the end of our meeting.

Block of the Quarter – Wendy Riggs: Wendy showed us the Spring Flower Garden Block using greens and florals. She will have the pattern available next month, also. The pattern will also be available in our newsletter. The drawing for the blocks will be in March.

Auction – Eddie Gray: Eddie will be coordinating our 2011 October auction. She reminded us to make something that we would want to give to a close friend for a gift. She reminded us of the value that people put into the items they make. The auction is a big money maker for us.

Strip Exchange – Barb Czarniecki: The colors for the strips have been determined for the year. Barb will be giving us some patterns that we can use to use our strips, too. Barb also had the first of a Mystery Quilt pattern that will make a crib sized quilt.

Newsletter & Blog& Library – Mary Hattick: Debbie Korell is storing all the books for our library at her name. The library quilting books are listed on our website. To borrow books, send an e-mail to: cospringsqg@gmail.com Include your name and e-mail address in the request.

Monthly Raffle – Barbara Shie: Our raffle for this month was a lovely purse made by Angela Gilpin. Barb is encouraging everyone to sign up for a monthly raffle. It helps us pay our rent! Our lucky winner for the purse this month was Cathy LeFrance.

Charity Quilts & Challenge Quilts - Ann Seymoure: Remember to keep sewing quilts for Safe Passage. Our challenge is to complete more unfinished projects. Bring a batik fat quarter to Ann for each unfinished project that you want to complete. Give her your list next month. Let’s challenge each other to finish some UFO’s!

Unfinished Business: At the board meeting on January 6, 2011, the decision was made for the guild to not purchase an Accu-Cut Roller Die Cutting Machine. Perhaps a small group or an individual would like to purchase one and rent it out to members.

New Business:

We have openings for the following positions which can be filled by a member or by a group of members: Raffle Quilt 2012, July birthday party, December Christmas party, Nominating Committee

The top of our Raffle Quilt for 2011 was revealed. Jeanie Brooks and Cindy Pring did a wonderful job. It now goes to Bonnie Burt, who will machine quilt it.

Laural passed sign-up sheets around for members to sign up to sell raffle tickets for our quilt at the Denver Merchandise Market (Rocky Mountain Sewing Expo) in February and for the CQC monthly meeting in February in Longmont.

The Woodmen Edition (northern local newspaper) has interviewed Laural about our quilt guild.

Laural handed out candy bars to our members with January birthdays.

Laural is challenging all of us l to make / donate 4 charity quilts this year. If you meet the challenge, you will receive a small scissors charm.

Show and Tell: Remember, when you show us your quilts your name is included in a chance to win a Jim Shore angel or a gift certificate. Drawings will be held in June and in November. Members who participated in Show and Tell this month were: Barb Czarniecki, Sandy Graham, Kathy Barrett, Jalinda Gieck, Cat Mikelson, Joan Musak, Karen Leigh, Debbie Jacobs, Mary Hattick & Pat Richie.

Door Prizes: If you win one, please bring one to our next meeting! It should be a new item, $10.00 or less in value. Winners were: Barb Czarniecki, Karen Leigh, Bonnie Burt, Kathy Barrett, Sandra Graham, Wendy Riggs, Debbie Jacobs & Kathy Dailey. Linda Babcock won a $25.00 gift certificate from Ruth’s Stitchery.

Announcements:

We met January 6th, 2011, at Ruth’s Stitchery at 6:00. Members present were: Laural Hoppes, Cindy Pring, Jeanie Brooks, Susan Reed-Throckmorton, Ann Seymoure, Debby Pyeatt, Mary Hattick, Bonnie Burt and Gloria Lesher

We discussed upcoming programs for the year. We are going to be creative with the March charity quilt meeting and include some exciting new ideas. Speakers for May and August are being contacted and contracts are being collected for various months. As soon as we have them, the programs will be announced.

We would like to continue to list the names of the wonderful people who complete charity quilts in our newsletter. Of course, if a member is uncomfortable with this, one can always choose to be anonymous. Laural would like to challenge all members to contribute 4 charity quilts this year. If a member meets that challenge, she will be rewarded! (on earth and in heaven).    Drawings / prizes for contributing charity quilts and for sharing quilts at show and tell will be given twice a year, rather than four times a year. Winners will be able to choose from various items.

The raffle quilt top has been completed by Jeanie Brooks and Cindy Pring. Bonnie Burt will quilt it for us. It is absolutely beautiful and we appreciate these ladies hard work and time.

Speaking of raffles, our games raffle license has expired. There is a meeting January 28th, a Friday, at 12:30 in Denver. Anyone who would like to be licensed to raffle may attend!

We would love it if all members could wear nametags at our meetings. We will supply sticky disposable ones if members forget and / or are busy, overworked, tired and exhausted!

Let’s encourage friends, neighbors and relatives to join our guild!   More members add to our budget which allows us to rent the Senior Center and to pay an additional $25 to have our tables and chairs set up and taken down.

Our auction brings in a nice amount of money each year in October. Eddie Gray has graciously volunteered to chair the October 2011 auction.

Old business: We discussed purchasing an Accu-Cut Roller Die Cutting Machine and as a board have decided that it might be best for an individual to purchase this and rent it out OR for a small group to purchase it OR for members to use / rent those available at quilt shops.

How about a quilting retreat in 2012? Jeanie is looking into it.

Colorado Springs Quilt uild Officer's Meeting Minutes, December 2, 2010
Attendees: Barb Czarniecki, Mary Hattick, Susan Reid-Throckmorton, Laural Hoppes, Cindy Pring

Meeting started at 6:04 p.m.

Barb said she was wrong and will apologize to the guild at the meeting regarding dues. She was contacted multiple times from members stating dues cannot be raised without a vote by the membership. Dues will be $20.00 for 2011 and we will discuss increasing the dues in January 2011.

Laural gave an update on raffle certification. At present Jean Woofter is the only member who is certified. We will try to get more members certified so Jean doesn't always have to be at the meeting. Laural has done a lot of research and found that Patrick Ryan does a class in the Springs. Anyone interested in becoming certified please contact Laural.

We went over the bylaws and decided to review and revise the bylaws in 2011. The last time it was done was in 2005. We would like all members to review their copy of the bylaws. If you do not have your copy it will be posted on the website. If you have an issue or suggestion please send an email to the website and we will collect them. Please do not call.

Scott stated at the November meeting that he would bring an accuquilt go cutting machine to the meeting in January and we will vote on whether the guild should purchase one for guild member use.

First United Methodist Church-proposed meeting space

I went and visited the church today to look at the space they are proposing. It is the Parlor (and the Parlor Kitchen). It measures approximately 30 feet wide by 50 feet long, and there is a small kitchen attached. There is a table always set up just outside the kitchen door where we can put our food. The picture below shows the kitchen door and the table set up outside. (If you want to see larger pictures, click on any of them)

The room is at the south end of the church building, and most of the parking is at the north end. There is a door not far from the room, and about 6 stairs to walk up from the street. It is half a floor above street level. I measure using google earth, and it looks like the walk from the north parking lots to the room is about 500 feet. There is an elevator if you're coming in from the north (the long way) but I'm not sure about the south.

To the right is a diagram of the first floor and where the room is. If you click on it you'll get much more detail. The green line is the path to walk to get the room. Below are more pictures of the room. The staff at the church will set up chairs, tables and the sound system and take them down. There are four couches in the room and various other coffee tables and side tables. They would remain in the room, the center portion would be used to set up the chairs. The maintenance person I talked to said that they would put tables where we wanted. If we need a projector to connect to a laptop, and a screen they will also set that up. The middle section where the chairs would go is about 20 feet wide by 40 feet long. A very rough estimate of the space we currently use is about 20 by 40. Remember we are voting in November to decide which space we are going to use next year.

Guild Meeting Minutes October 14, 2010

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 by Barb Czarnieki

On Tuesday, October 19 there will be an open house at the Fine Arts Center from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.. There will be a quilt artist who uses textures for colors so the blind can enjoy art.

Jilly McCloy wrote a letter to the Senior Center. She found out that it is now under the housing authority and not the city of Colorado Springs. The center is open to negotiations about the price of using the space, so we may be able to continue using it for the same cost.

Mary Hattick reported that the First United Methodist Church downtown is willing to rent us space. It will cost $25 per meeting and the church staff will include set up and take down of chairs and tables. She will include more information in the newsletter and on the web site.

If you are not going to be at the November meeting when we hold the vote about where we will meet next year, you can vote by emailing cospringsqg@gmail.com or send a letter via regular mail to Barb Czarnieki indicating your vote.

Jilly had a message from Nikki, who is in charge of the Christmas Party. She is suggesting a Hawaiian theme with platters from Chik-fil-a and food donations from members. She also has ideas for games, with each member bringing 2 fat quarters (batiks) to use as prizes. Each member will be asked to bring 2 fat quarters, a side dish, and an item to be donated to charity. She will give more information at the November meeting about the charity aspect.

Wendy Riggs is heading the nominating committee. Some people have already volunteered for positions in the guild. Gloria Lesher is the most recent volunteer, she will take over the secretary's position. Other available spots will be posted in the newsletter and on the web site.

Tonight is the guild's auction. The auctioneer is Leo Christner.

We grossed $2,715.00 from the auction. After expenses, that is $2500.00 donated by our members!

So far, we have sold $822 in quilt raffle tickets.

The meeting was called to order at 6:00

Mary reported that the First United Methodist Church at Nevada and Boulder (420 N. Nevada Ave) is willing to rent us space for our guild meeting.s The cost will be $25 per meeting and the church staff will set up and take down tables and chairs. Mary will report to members in the newsletter so they can have information before we vote at the November meeting. She will also get some pictures and post them on the web so people can see what the room will look like.

Mary and Deb both contacted the DAV organization in east Colorado Springs to see about meeting there. Mary contacted via email, and Deb called and left a message. Neither got a reply, so the board decided not to pursue that venue.

Mary also reported that Jonnie Nottingham, a past guild president, found the email address through the website. She had some documents and pictures from the guild in the 90s and wanted to return them. She sent a box and Mary will return it to the guild at the next meeting.

Laural reminded the board that there were 4 quilts donated by Angela Gilpin last year for binding. Laural Hoppes, Lyn Seaver, Daniella Keenan, and Pat Webb each took one to bind. We will check to see which will be brought back for the auction.

Ann Seymoure reported that the charity quilts she brings to Safe Passage are definitely appreciated. Also, the staff reports to her that the first quilts to be picked out by the children, are those with fleece backing, so please feel free to use fleece. She also stated she still has plenty of fabric for tops, and lots of fleece for backing. Please contact her if you want any fabric or backing for charity quilts.

A Sneak Peek

Guild Meeting Minutes, June 10

Meeting was called to order at 6:30 by the President.

We had no guests and no new members. We have 78 members

Laurel Hoppes announced that you can still do the challenges for this year. If you don’t have your special block to her you can still mail it.

TREASURERS REPORT: Our operating account is $13613.94 and our raffle account has a balance of $4337.27.

PROGRAMS: Joanne announced we will have some changes to the program schedule. In August Karen Pharr will do a trunk show and on August 14, 2010 she will do a workshop on Window Landscapes. The cost of the workshop is $40.00 and will be held from 10:00 to 5:00pm. November Jean Ann Wright will be our speaker she does lectures and dresses according to the era.

BLOG: Mary has changed the blog so everybody go check it out. The address is csqg.blogspot.com. Mary has added a page of links to the blog.

BLOCK OF THE QUARTER: We did the drawing for the block of the quarter. It was won by Barb Czarniecki.

CHARITY QUILTS : Mary Hattick showed two charity quilts and Jeanie Brooks also shared a charity quilt.

MONTHLY RAFFLE: Jean and Becky sold tickets for our monthly raffle. The raffle gift was a beautiful flower basket donated by Tanya Santini. We made $48.00. The raffle was won by Angela Gilpin.

CHARM STRIPS: Sophie announced we need more people to participate in the Stripping. Next months strips will be red,white, and blue.

SECRET PALS: Sophie announced we will reveal secret pals next month and if would be nice if you brought a nice thank you gift for your secret pal. We will also choose new secret pals for the next six months.

OLD BUSINESS: None reported

RAFFLE QUILT: Debbie Korrell has tickets available for members to pick up and sell. Due to lack of interest from the crafters the craft sale at Bancroft Park has been canceled on June19. Thank you to everyone who signed up. They will still hold the one August 14 to show our raffle quilt and sell tickets. Thank you to everyone who volunteered.

COMFORT QUILT COMMITTEE: Anyone who would like to make Friendship Blocks for people who are ill in our guild can get information from Bonnie. Patty Loewenkamp is the committee chair person.

HOSPITALITY: We have ladies signed up to do our July birthday party. We will have a pot luck and the guild will provide the cake and ice cream.

NEW BUSINESS: Debbie Korrell announced she will not run for secretary next year and we also need someone to do our monthly raffle. There will be a Quilt Show in the Springs in 2011.

SHOW & TELL : Joanne Anderson, Pat Ritchie, Debbie Jacobs, Cheryl Griffin, Laurel Hoppes, Kathy Barrett, Kathy LaFrance, and Bev Haring all shared show and tell.

DOOR PRIZES: Door Prizes were won this month by, Joanne Anderson, Laural Hoppes ,Michelle Hankins, Susan Reed Throckmorton, Lyn Seaver, Debbie Jacobs, Kathy Dailey, Mary Rutner, Kathy Barrett, Jeanie Brooks, Bev Haring, and Sophie Hamilton. If you’re a winner this month please don’t forget to bring door prizes to the July meeting.

NEW BUSINESS: We started a guild library this month. Debbie Korrell had offered to store the books and Mary Hattick will create the database. Please bring any quilt books next month you would like to donate to the library. The list of books available are on the blog. Look for the link on the right side.

In July at the birthday party we will have an oriental auction and people will get a number and you get to pick a gift and unwrap. The "gifts" will be a UFO that is unfinished that you have given up on. You can exchange your gift up to 3 times only.

PROGRAM: Our program this month was presented by members of the guild. Bev Haring shared beading on your quilt, Barb Czarniecki showing us how to do bindings, Kathy Barrett demonstrated paper piecing, and Mary Hattick demonstrated Stack and Whack. It was really a fun night and I learned a lot about all of the different subjects.

Kathy Barrett will take meeting minutes in July as I will be out of town.

Binding Strips

Danielle Keenan took home one of the quilts Angela donated to the October auction that needed to be bound, but can't find the binding strips that go with it. Someone called her and said they had the strips that were already cut for the binding for that quilt, but she missed the next meeting and can’t remember their name.

If you have the strips in a blue/brown batik please bring them to the June meeting, or call her and she will come pick them up. If you don't have your guild address list, send an email to cospringsqg@gmail.com and I'll forward the information to her.

The guild members have decided to start a library. The books will be stored at a members house, and will be brought in to be loaned, or can be picked up. Books will be loaned for 2 months.

If you want to make a short term loan (1 year) you can do that as well. That way you can share your books, but still keep them.

BOARD MEETING MINUTES

The meeting was called to order at 6:00pm by Barb Czamiecki.

Members in attendance included Barb Czarniecki, Debbie Korrell, Mary Hattick, ,Ann Seymoure, Laural Hoppes, and Jean Woofter.

Barb said we need to find people to sign up to show our quilt at Bancroft Park on June 19, and August 14th. We are asking people to sign up for 2 hour blocks of time beginning at 8:00am and resuming at 4:00pm. Preferably two people each two hour session.

Debbie Korrell will make tickets for the raffle quilt. The tickets will be available at the April Meeting for quilt guild members to begin selling. Please pick up your tickets and try to sell at least ten. This is our Quilt Guilds money maker for the year and it would be great to see everyone participate. Each time a member sells 20 raffle tickets there name will be put in a jar. The night we raffle the quilt we will also pick a name from the can and that person wins a 1 year subscription to a Quilt Magazine up to a $30.00 value.

Anne Seymoure announced that we will not have Quilt-In next year if we don’t find volunteers to help bring all the supplies and things to the center and help take them back. We need to find a committee willing to do this.

Mary has added announcements to our blog so be sure and go in and check it out.

March Charity Quilt In

March 11 will be the guild's All Sew Meeting from 5:00-9:00. Please bring your personal sewing utensils such as scissors, rotary cutter, mat, needles, straight pins as well as a variety of thread colors.

Plan to be ready to help make quilt "sandwiches" (top, batting and finished top). Sandwiches will be prepared and ready to be serged together and then quilted or tied.

A few tops and backs are ready. Batting will be supplies as well as some backing material. Please bring any completed tops and backing if you have any.

Please send an email to the guild email address or call Ann Seymoure (598-1016) if you plan to bring a sewing machine, serger, ironing board and iron, etc. Since it is a long meeting, you may want to help with snacks too. Chocolate is always good!

The Renegade Quilters will be meeting at Ann's all day March 11th, cutting and piecing. You are welcome to join the fun. Lots of fabric available for you to play with. Please make an effort to come a little early and stay a little longer to help with setup and tear down, if you can help. We will use a lot of tables and need some extra helping hands.

Guild Challenges for 2010

UFO Challenge - It’s time to clean out that closet again! Make a list of those unfinished projects that are hanging over your head. Clear your conscious of those purchases you just had to have and haven’t gotten around to yet because you found something else to make. Join us for the 1st UFO Challenge.

How it works: Bring a list of unfinished projects with your name and phone number to the January or February meeting. -For each item on your list, bring a Batik fat quarter to put in the drawing. - Finish your project (s) by November 2010 meeting. -Bring each finished project to the Challenge table to be checked off your list. (Finished means quilted and bound) Show it off in Show ‘n Tell. (not a requirement). -Fill out a ticket for each finished project and put in basket. -Drawing will be held at the November meeting. Five bundles of fat quarters will be given as prizes. The more you finish, the better your chances are to win Batik fat quarters.

View from a Window - You are invited to develop a piece from a view. The “view” could be determined in one of several ways: a real view window or a totally imaginary view from an imaginary window. Picture examples will be available at meetings.

How it works: The only ‘rule’ is that the piece has to look like a “window” in some way.

Round Robin – American Medallion Friendship

How it works: Bring a completed center block to our next meeting (February). The center block is the design of your choice. It may be any size between 12 inches and 18 inches square. (The center block, all borders, cornerstones, or whatever should be carefully squared each step of the project.)

Put your block in a box or bag with any fabrics that you want included in the borders. (If you do not include fabrics, the person adding the border will select and supply fabric of her choice.) Include a disposable flash camera if you want a record of each step in the creation of your top. The quilt top belongs to the person who made the center. You will need to choose your own group for this Round Robin and will need 4 quilters.

Borders should be between 3 inches and 6 inches wide. Exchanges follow:
1.(February) Center block – owner of quilt
2. (April) Round 1 – pieced border, triangles
3. (June) Round 2 – appliquéd border
4. (August) Round 3 – pieced border, rectangles
5. (October) Round 4 – embellishment or border of your choice

What is a Round Robin Quilt Exchange?
You design the starter block for your quilt. This establishes the color choice and theme of your quilt. You send your block to another person in the group. They work on your quilt while you work on a border for another member of this group. Each person in the group is working on someone’s quilt. At a pre-set timeline, you exchange the quilt you were working on to the next person in the Round Robin Quilt Exchange. You then receive a new quilt to work on the next border. Please consider: The skill level of the Quilters. It is more rewarding to be with other quilter of your similar skill level. Of course, everyone’s skill level is based on his or her own judgment. You will need to choose your own group for this Round Robin and will need 4 quilters. You must commit to completing each round on time! Your delay in exchanging the quilt on time will impact others in the group.

Quilt Memory Book Supply List for February Meeting

1.Photo Album or 3-ring binder
2.28 inches (approximately) for fabric for album cover (measure our book add 2 inches to turn to th inside of the book)
3.Extra piece will be used for inside front and back cover, if you want a frame on the front, you will need 9 inches of material
4.1 yard of lace trim (for front frame on book). I bought 3 yards of lace to go around the outside of the book
5.2 ribbons to tie book together when finished. I bought 2 yards of 1 inch ribbon in different colors
6.Batting for binder. Measure your book front and inside of book on both sides to see how much you need.
7.2 large sheets of poster board.
8.Glue gun and sticks and tacky glue (I used both)
9.Optional ribbon for frame on front of book or appliqué to add to corners of frame for decoration

This class will be on February 11, 2010. There will be no show n tell for this meeting. We will have the business meeting, break and then work on this project.

Barb called the meeting to order at 6:00

Debbie Korrell volunteered to be in charge of raffle tickets for 2010. Many more tickets were printed than were sold in 2009, so only half the number will be printed and distributed this year.

Barb got an announcement from the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum of their new location of 1213 Washington Ave. (one block south of the prior location). She also received some items from them that she will put in a monthly raffle basket for the guild. She also mentioned an opportunity for making charity quilts. If you want to make quilts for kids go to http://www.quiltsforkids.org. You can request a quilt kit--fabric, pattern and backing. They will send it to you and ask that you sew the top together, add your own batting and quilt it. Then return it to them to be donated to hospitalized children as comfort quilts. You can also find free, easy patterns for charity quilts on their website.

Cindy Pring announced that Martha Johnson and she are in the process of transferring all accounts to Cindy so she can take over the treasurer's duties.

Laural reminded us that if members do not pay their dues by the February meeting (as stated in the by-laws) they will be removed from the member roster and will be considered guests and be expected to pay the $5 guest fee at each meeting they attend. Laural also announced positions on committees that still need members or chairperson:

Barb purchased 300 bookmarks to be placed at local fabric shops to advertise the guild. They will be placed at Ruth's Stitchery, High Country Fabrics, Mill Outlet, Ladybug Hill Quilts, Nala's, Hancock Fabrics and Nuts and Bolts. Barb will have more printed for members.

Jo Ann Anderson will present the program at the February meeting--a Quilt Memory Book. It will be a make and take program. She will bring a sample to the January meeting so members can see it to know what it will look like when done. She also received information about a possible program for 2012. A company makes pre-cut quilt kits and would like to come and show the kits and do a trunk show.

In February, there will be no Show and Tell to give more time to complete the Quilt Memory Books. As a result of budget cuts and changes in policy at the Senior Center, we have to be out of the room (with all clean-up completed) by 9:00.

Cindy Pring and Jeanie Brooks have volunteered to make the guild raffle quilt for 2011. They already have the pattern picked out and plan to use bright batiks for the fabrics. They plan to bring the pattern and sample fabrics to the January meeting and ask folks to look through their stashes to donate fabrics for the quilt.

Ann Seymoure expressed concern that we are not as active in making charity quilts as in previous years. She suggested that we could ask someone from the organizations we donate quilts to come and tell us about how the quilts affect those who receive them. We could do this at the Christmas party, so we include giving as well as receiving during the party. If we had more connection to the organizations, and understood how valuable they are we might be encouraged to make more quilts. It was also suggested that we might set a number goal for donated quilts and keep track using a large thermometer graphic to see how close we are to the goal.

Laural suggested that we might consider making our own quilt stands for use by the guild. We might then be able to have a guild quilt show. Someone suggested we might contact other guilds in the area to "rent" their stands instead of making them and having to store them all year.

Barb suggested we reinstate the quarterly drawing for a prize for members who participate in show and tell. Each time they participate they will be entered in the drawing for a prize. Mary suggested we could do the same thing for those who bring in charity quilts.

As a result of budget cuts and changes in policy at the Senior Center, we will not have as much time or as much staff to help us with set up and tear down. We are going to set up only the first couple of rows of chairs, and when members come in they will be asked to grab a chair and add it to those already set up. We also need more members helping with clean-up after meetings. Please be sure to take your chair and put it away. Also look around your area and pick up anything left on the floor.

Charity Quilt Sew Days

November 12, 2009

Meeting was called to order at 6:30 by the President.

We had 5 guests. Total number of members 89
Martha reported we made $100 less this year on our auction than we did last year.
Our guests this month were Debbiee Pyeatt, Jill McCoy, Susan Reed, Becky Sharp , and Gail Piper.

The Senior Center informed us that beginning in January they will start charging $30.00 per hour for any group using their facilities. We will have a ½ hour before meetings and ½ after meetings to set up and clean up for our meetings. Barb announced that we give the Senior Center a $500 donation each year. A motion was made by Mary Rutner to go ahead and stay at the Senior Center and pay the $30 per hour. The motion was 2nd by Mary Hattick. Motion was voted and approved.

Jean Woofter and Debbie Korrell volunteered to be our quilt keepers.

We are still looking for someone to volunteer for hospitality. Anyone who is interested please call Jean Woofter at 596-7814.

Laural Hoppes announced that she has the new membership forms for next year. Please fill out the forms completely. They are also available on the internet.

PROGRAMS: Jo Ann Anderson announced programs for 2010 are complete. There were a lot of suggestions brought up on ways to afford more programs. In 2011 we will probably go with one main speaker. Someone suggested to use Jackie Robinson (or some other nationally known speaker) and we could make that our challenge quilt also.

TREASURERS REPORT: There is $13,252.17 in our operating account. Our raffle account has a balance of $3992.85 We still have a lot of tickets that haven’t been picked up to sell for our raffle quilt. We have sold $450.00. We will do the drawing next month.

BLOCK OF THE QUARTER: Wendy Riggs explained how the block of the quarter works. We will do the drawing next month.

CHALLENGE QUILTS: Laural Hoppes explained that your mystery quilts must be done by next month. If you have your name on the quilt please cover it up. We will hang the quilts on quilt hangers. There will be four winners picked. The categories will be; President’s Choice, Past President’s Choice, Peoples Choice, and Ruth’s Choice from Ruth's Quilt Shop.

CHARITY QUILTS: Ann Seymour announced we will do charity quilts in March beginning at 5:00 pm. If you like to make quilt tops but not quilt them, bring them in March and we will finish them at the meeting that night.

CHRISTMAS PARTY: Please bring the following items to the Christmas Party in December; a pencil, paper scissors, fabric scissors, needle (with an eye large enough to hold 2 strands of floss), a few straight pins, thimble (if you use one) and a small bottle of glue -Elmer's is fine. Lyn announced that our charity this year is going to be Express Inn. Please bring new socks and underwear for men, women, and children to donate.

MONTHLY RAFFLE: Jean Woofter announced we had a nice gift basket for our raffle this month. Our raffle was won by Cheryl Ross.

SECRET PALS: Mary reminded everyone to pick up your gifts from your Secret Pal.

RAFFLE QUILT: Our raffle quilt is at Nuts & Bolts in Woodland Park. We will draw for the winner in December at the meeting.

OLD BUSINESS: None reported

NEW BUSINESS: Barb announced tonight is elections: Jeanie Brooks made a motion to vote for all candidates at once. Mary Roth 2nd the motion.
The motion was voted on and passed. Board Members are as follows : President; Barb Czarniecki, Vice President; Laural Hoppes, 2nd Vice President; Jo Ann Anderson, Secretary; Debbie Korrell, Treasurer; Cindy Pring.

PROGRAM: Our program this month is Granma’s Button Box by Jill Gerski. Jill is a Buttonologist. She is a member of the National Button Society and other button groups. She collects & educates others about button history, identification, care & preservation through her lecture series and educational displays. She had combined her tow loves, quilter and crafter and has become an author. We learned a lot of interesting facts about buttons. It was a great program

Christmas Party-What to Bring

Ready for the holiday party? Giving, crafting, fun and eating will definitely be part of the evening. Please remember to support the EXPRESS INN. Bring new underwear and socks for the residents there so their holiday will be brighter. Residents range in age from 0 to 80, male and female, single, marrieds and even families. A box will be by the door as you enter our meeting so just drop your donations when you arrive.

To join in the fun during the meeting you will be to bring a few things to work with:
+ pencil
+scissors to cut paper
+scissors to cut felt
+glue (any small bottle of Elmer's will do)
+Needle to handle two strands of floss
+thimble, if you use one
+a few pins

President's Notes

Greetings quilting friends!

Wow! The year sure has flown by! Our slate of Officer's was presented and voted on at the November meeting. I will continue as President in 2010, Laural Hoppes will continue as 1st Vice-President/Membership, Debbie Korrel will continue as Secretary, and Cindy Pring will be our new Treasurer. Thank you Martha for doing a great job as our Treasurer for the past few years. Thank you s also go out to Jean Woofter who was our nominating chairman. There are still slots to fill for the coming year, so please consider helping out your guild. If you have any ideas or programs you would like to see, please contact one of us and let us know. This is your guild.

I hope all of you at our November meeting enjoyed our speaker, Jill Gorski. I learned a lot about buttons, their history and their value I should really look through my button jar more carefully! If you missed her talk, she was featured in the last American Quilter magazine. As you all know, Prop. 2C did not pass, so we will have to start paying to use the Senior Center. We had a motion and voted to continue meeting at the Senior Center for the time being, at a cost of $60.00 per night. John, who has always been so helpful to us setting up and taking down tables and chairs for our meetings, will lose his position in December. This means we will all have to step up and help with the table and chairs so just a few are not taxed to do this. If we all help, it will go much smoother. Please take a moment at the next meeting to thank John for all he has done for us.

The December meeting will be our annual Christmas Party. Lyn and her crew have lots of fun planned for us, so I hope you will be able to attend. Please check out Lyn's article so you know what to bring with you. It's also time to renew our memberships in the guild, so please stop by and see Laural at the meeting. We will also be unveiling our mystery quilts- I can hardly wait! Merry Christmas to all of you!!

Attendees: Mary H. , Jo Ann , Bonnie, Laural, Martha, Barb. Debbie was absent due to illness

Raffle quilt- it is at Nuts and Bolts in Woodland Park until December

Mary- Purchased a digital camera for the guild to be used at the meetings.

Martha- auction income was $2763.00, $103.00 less than last year

Laural- presented an new idea for next year's auction, a silent auction table. We have 3 memberships submitted for 2010. The ballots are done for the Mystery Challenge quilts, and she has prizes for the participants.

JoAnn- the programs are set for 2010. She is currently looking for speakers for 2011. She is also looking for members to put on the guild workshop in 2010.

Because the tax issue wasn't passed in Colorado Springs, we will ask guild members to form a committee for a place for the guild to meet since the Senior Center will probably close at some point.

Elections will be done in November. Laural will make a poster of those who are running for Board positions. Mary will send out an email or postcard to inform members that elections will be held at the November meeting. We will also need a motion at the November meeting to give the Senior center our annual donation of $500.00

Board Members:
President: Runs the meetings, organizes the various committees, prepares and submits a newsletter article, including the agenda for the meetings. Appoints all committee chairpersons, monitor and assist all committees, keep records of office and transfer to successor, perform other duties as may be required by the Executive Board.

1st Vice President (Membership): Presides at meetings in absence of President, fill the office of President in the event of a vacancy, collect membership dues, maintain a membership roster , furnish the roster to members twice yearly, conduct sales of CSQG membership pins, keep records of Office and transfer to successor, perform such other duties as may be required by the Executive Board. Computer skills are necessary to print out rosters, name tags, etc.

2nd Vice President (Programs): Plan, organize and present a monthly program reflecting the interests of the membership, consult with the new 2nd Vice President two months into the year following current tenure. Keep records of Office and transfer to successor. Perform such other duties as may be required by the Executive Board.

Secretary: Record the proceedings of all general membership and Executive Board meetings, publish a summary of all general and Board meetings in newsletter. Keep records of office and transfer same to successor , maintain correspondence on behalf of the Presi-dent. Perform such other duties as may be required by the Executive Board.

Treasurer: Receives and deposits all monies received by the guild; disburse the funds as authorized by the officers of the guild; reconcile bank accounts on a monthly basis; develop an annual budget with cooperation from the officers and committee chairs; prepare all nec-essary reports relating to the raffle incomes and file quarterly reports with the Secretary of State.

Committees:
Block of the Quarter: Directions for Block of the Quarter are given four times during the year. Members make the blocks and bring to the meetings and someone will received all that have been made during this quarter. Directions are available at meetings and on our web site. Chairperson picks the block, writes directions and helps with the drawing for the blocks.

Challenge Quilts: Picks a quilt for the members to work on throughout the year. Round robin styles need to be organized with members sharing blocks. Mystery Quilt styles will need directions written for the newsletter. At least one challenge quilt is offered each year.

Charity Quilts: Quilts are made by the guild members and donated to Safe Passage.. Size guidelines would be Crib—36‖ X 45‖ and Lap—45‖ to 60‖, but any size quilt is gladly accepted. Chairperson is responsible for cutting kits, collecting quilts and delivering to our charities.

Charity Quilts—cut kits: Members of this committee will help the chairperson cut kits. Time involved will vary by members of this committee.

Christmas Party: This meeting is held the second Thursday of December. Chairperson can decide what activities will be held dur-ing his meeting. Chairperson also organizes food for the meeting. The Holiday party takes at least 10 hours with the craft prep, food buying and prep.

Door Prizes: Quilt-related door prizes are gratefully accepted and add a special excitement to our meetings. If you win a door prize, please donate one at the next meeting.

Strip Club: There is a strip exchange each month. Strips will be 2 ½‖. Each participate brings 6 strips cut from ½ yard of fabric. Each month will have a different color/theme of fabric. Chairperson de-cides the color/themes and organizing strips to return to members next month.

Historian: Duties shall include maintenance of copies of all newslet-ters and minutes of meetings, library materials, records, and any other material of present or future historical interest to CSQG. An inven-tory of CSQG property will be maintained. The Chairperson will keep records of activities and transfer to successor.

Hospitality: Duties include coordination of refreshments for meet-ings, setting up meeting rooms prior to meeting, cleaning of room after meetings, maintenance and organization of door prizes, greeting of members and guests, and maintenance of any food service equip-ment belonging to CSQG.. It takes an hour each Month :writing the newsletter article prep before the meeting and then attendance at every meeting to bring paper goods.

July Birthday Party: Organizers of the birthday party plan games/activities, (and food )for the birthday. The meeting is cut short and the rest of the evening is devoted to the party. Money is available to purchase items needed.

Raffle Quilt for 2011: Making of a minimum of a queen size quilt for the guild. Money is available for materials.

Secret Pals: Every six months members fill out a form about them-selves (birthday, favorite colors, patterns and quilting techniques, etc.) and names are secretly drawn for a ―pal‖ to get to know. With the information provided on the form, members have a chance to surprise their pal with little gifts and cards. Chairperson coordinates secret pals, and ―revealing‖ of pals every six months.

Webmaster: Maintains and makes changes to the guild’s web page.

Quilting tip

For an inexpensive way to "see" multiple blocks, use 2-12 inch mirror tiles. Use a piece of heavy duty tape to make a hinge. When you make a block, put the mirrors on two sides to see what four blocks together will look like, or add one more mirror and put them around three sides of your block to see what an entire quilt might look like.

You can also use the mirrors to reflect sketches you've made to see what a repeated design will look like.

Board Members

President: Runs the meetings, organizes the various committees, prepares and submits a newsletter article, including the agenda for the meetings. Appoints all committee chairpersons, monitor and assist all committees, keep records of office and transfer to successor, perform other duties as may be required by the Executive Board.

1st Vice President (Membership): Presides at meetings in absence of President, fill the office of President in the event of a vacancy, collect membership dues, maintain a membership roster, furnish the roster to members twice yearly, conduct sales of CSQG membership pins, keep records of Office and transfer to successor, perform such other duties as may be required by the Executive Board. Computer skills are necessary to print out rosters, name tags, etc.

2nd Vice President (Programs): Plan, organize and present a monthly program reflecting the interests of the membership, consult with the new 2nd Vice President two months into the year following current tenure. Keep records of Office and transfer to successor. Perform such other duties as may be required by the Executive Board.

Secretary: Record the proceedings of all general membership and Executive Board meetings, publish a summary of all general and Board meetings in newsletter. Keep records of office and transfer same to successor, maintain correspondence on behalf of the President. Perform such other duties as may be required by the Executive Board.

Treasurer: Receives and deposits all monies received by the guild; disburse the funds as authorized by the officers of the guild; reconcile bank accounts on a monthly basis; develop an annual budget with cooperation from the officers and committee chairs; prepare necessary reports relating to the raffle incomes and file quarterly reports with the Secretary of State.

Committees

Block of the Quarter: Directions for Block of the Quarter are given four times during the year. Members make the blocks and bring to the meetings and someone will received all that have been made during this quarter. Directions are available at meetings and on our web site. Chairperson picks the block, writes directions and helps with the drawing for the blocks.

Challenge Quilts: Picks a quilt for the members to work on throughout the year. Round robin styles need to be organized with members sharing blocks. Mystery Quilt styles will need directions written for the newsletter. At least one challenge quilt is offered each year.

Charity Quilts: Quilts are made by the guild members and donated to Safe Passage. Size guidelines would be Crib—36” X 45” and Lap—45” to 60”, but any size quilt is gladly accepted. Chairperson is responsible for cutting kits, collecting quilts and delivering to our charities.

Charity Quilts—kits: Members of this committee will help the chairperson cut kits. Time involved will vary by members of this committee.

Christmas Party: This meeting is held the second Thursday of December. Chairperson can decide what activities will be held during his meeting. Chairperson also organizes food for the meeting. The Holiday party takes at least 10 hours with the craft prep, food buying and prep.

Door Prizes: Quilt-related door prizes are gratefully accepted and add a special excitement to our meetings. If you win a door prize, please donate one at the next meeting.

Historian: Duties shall include maintenance of copies of all newsletters and minutes of meetings,
library materials, records, and any other material of present or future historical interest to CSQG. An inventory of CSQG property will be maintained. The Chairperson will keep records of activities and transfer to successor.

Hospitality: Duties include coordination of refreshments for meetings, setting up meeting rooms prior to meeting, cleaning of room after meetings, maintenance and organization of door prizes, greeting of members and guests, and maintenance of any food service equipment belonging to CSQG.. It takes an hour each Month :writing the newsletter article prep the meeting and then attendance at every meeting to bring paper goods.

July Birthday Party: Organizers of the birthday party plan games/activities, (and food )for the birthday. The meeting is cut short and the rest of the evening is devoted to the party. Money is available to purchase items needed.

24th Annual Exhibition of Quilts and Fine Woodworking

The 24th Annual Exhibition of Quilts and Woodworking is now accepting entries until September 4, 2009, by postmark. All residents of Colorado are eligible to enter. This is a unique and beautiful Exhibition in the beautiful Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. It is sponsored by the Colorado Quilting Council. Because of the Colorado Springs budget cuts, CQC is paying for a major part of the Exhibition. $1,500.00 will be awarded in prize money along with very special medallions made by Stephanie Haitz. The judge will be Gail Garber of New Mexico, an internationally known quilter, lecturer and author. Each entered quilt will be judged and the judging form will be given to the quilter. Judging on September 20, 2009, will be open for observation. The Opening Reception will be September 25, 2009, 4:30 PM.

Board Meeting Minutes 2 July 2009

Barb called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM

Jean Woofter: Tanya Santini will run the raffle quilt for August.
65 tickets were sold at Bancroft Park for the raffle quilt.

Mary Hattick: the guild has a new email address: cospringsqg@gmail.com. Barb made a motion and Debbie seconded that the board will pay for photo hosting on flickr.com. The free hosting allows 200 pictures per year and we have exceeded that limit. The cost for unlimited uploads and photos is $24.95/year. The new web presence for the guild will be a blog. The address is http://csqg.blogspot.com. The site will be updated as information is available. Mary Hattick will have slips with the blog address available for attendees at the July meeting, and will make a presentation at the August meeting introducing the blog to the guild.

Laural Hoppes: Clean-up after guild meetings has been left to a few officers. If all members will pick up their own chair, and a few stay to help put away tables and food it will be much more effective and efficient.

Laural: at the June meeting (David Taylor’s presentation) we had many guests. A number of them were 2nd time guests and did not sign in, so did not pay the $5 fee requested from 2nd time guests. We are suggesting that ALL guests now pay a fee to attend meetings. This will be brought to the guild members vote at the August meeting.

Laural: the by-laws state that if a new member wants to join the guild during June (or later) they should only pay half the dues, but returning members have to pay the yearly cost of dues, no matter when they join. The board thought we should make all purchased membership dues (new or returning member) half cost after June.

Jean Woofter: wants to be sure to get pictures of the items for the monthly raffle with the person who donated, as well as of the person who won the item to make a scrapbook. We will focus on getting this started in January 2010.

We still need people to work on the auction.

Jean Woofter volunteered to call members to solicit nominations for next year’s board.

The "Scant" Quarter Inch Seam Allowance

When machine piecing a quilt block it is important to use a seam allowance slightly less than 1/4 inch. This is because a slight amount of fabric is taken up in the fold when the seam is pressed to one side. One sixteenth of an inch won't cause too much distortion when there's only one seam in a block, but if there are four seams, the completed block will be off by 1/4 inch! It is especially important to use the scant 1/4 inch seam allowance when using rotary cut strips and pieces. The rotary cutter is very accurate and doesn't leave a bit more fabric as cutting fabric with scissors does.

Cut the tangle when prewashing fabrics

If you prewash your fabrics by machine, you have probably suffered through the tangle of excess threads that sometimes pull away from the cut edges. Try this trick to help cut down on this problem--open the cut of fabric out flat and clip a small (1/2") triangle from each corner. Wash as usual, and prepare to be pleasantly surprised at the lack of tangled threads.

Trimming and squareing up your Quilt

After quilting, the sides of your quilt may be slightly different in length. You can equalize the difference by measuring through the middle of the quilt both horizontally and vertically, and using these measurements (plus seam allowances) when figuring the binding length on each side.

You may wish to trim the quilt until the sides are equal, but if the amount you’re trimming is significant, keep in mind that you may alter the proportion and balance of the borders. You may also alter the difference between the quilting motifs and the quilt edge from one border to the next.

To begin squaring up your quilt, it’s best to lay your project on a rotary-cutting mat on a flat surface. Position a large acrylic square ruler in one corner of the quilt, aligning adjacent edges of the ruler with adjacent edges of the quilt top. Place a long acrylic ruler above the square ruler, aligning the long edge with the quilt top edge. Using a rotary cutter, cut away the batting and backing that extend beyond the quilt top edge. Reposition the rulers and cutting mat as needed to trim around the entire quilt. If you do not wish to rotary-cut the excess batting and backing, mark the cutting line along the ruler edge, and then use scissors to trim on the line.

To restore old blocks/quilts, try the following recipe:

1 Gallon Water
1 Quart Buttermilk
1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice

Soak quilt in mixture then wash in mild detergent. Your colors will return to their original brilliance.
